Forticrete provides the ideal finish for North Shore Academy
Three different finishes of high performance masonry from Forticrete have been specified for the construction of North Shore Academy, a new £17.8 million academy which includes a £4 million MyPlace / sports facility in Stockton-on-Tees, to create visually contrasting textures across the site.
The external façade of the academy is primarily clad in Forticrete's popular Splitfaced Ivory which emulates the rugged appeal of natural hewn stone. This provides a clear textured contrast to the academy's smooth, profiled metal cladding, render and aluminium curtain walling. The academy's sports and community facility is clad in a mixture of Forticrete's Splitfaced Ivory, its Shot-Blasted Ivory which provides a natural weathered appeal, and its Fairfaced Ivory blocks which offers a smooth finish.
Architects for the project, Ryder Architecture, specified the Forticrete blocks with the aim of creating a modern, awe-inspiring learning environment within which its pupils can fulfil their potential. The academy comprises a three-storey and a two-storey teaching wing around a central atrium with a state-of-the-art sports and a myplace community facility. As part of the government's myplace programme, which aims to provide facilities for young people to enjoy, the site boasts an activity studio, a four-court sports hall, a fitness suite, recording studios, a 3G sports pitch and conference facilities.
Suzanne Blair, Associate at Ryder Architecture, commented: "To deliver the inspiring finish we were looking for, we wanted a robust product with a strong aesthetic, capable of providing a textured contrast with the academy's cladding, especially in high traffic areas and around its main entrance. For the sports facility's windowless façade, we wanted to create understated subtle panelled effect to visually break down the facility's large volume.
"After considering the use of traditional brick, we concluded that blockwork provided a better fit given the scale of the development. Forticrete's Splitfaced Ivory provides a fascinating textured contrast with the academy's cladding. For the sports facility, a mixture of Forticrete's Splitfaced Ivory, Shot-Blasted Ivory and Fairfaced Ivory blocks create the desired subtle panelled effect. We couldn't be happier with the finish.
"What's more, we found Forticrete's service to be a very professional process from start to finish, which helped us to deliver the finished developments within the tight 60-week build timescale."
Offering a wide selection of decorative concrete facing blocks, Forticrete's Architectural Masonry range is an aesthetically effective alternative to the internal or the external leaf of a cavity construction, which creates clean, maintenance free surfaces with either bold uniformity or a variety of colour and bond patterns to brighten even the most functional of environments.
