War Memorial Shrivenham

Precast Specials for War Memorial

Forticrete were recently approached by HLM Architects to see if they could assist with a project at the Joint Services Command and Staff College at Shrivenham, Wiltshire.

The proposal was to construct a War Memorial in a courtyard in the college to which Forticrete had supplied the Architectural Masonry.

The project had a given time line of 10 weeks to design, construct and install, in order to allow it to be used for the College Remembrance Day service. HLM felt sure that being Innovators in Concrete, Forticrete would be able to fulfil these requirements.

An initial design meeting identified an ellipse 1500mm wide and 1000mm high in Precast Romano would need to be required. To serve the college, items of ordnance from the three services would be cast into the ellipse. These were a fan blade from the engine of a Harrier Jump Jet; a length of anchor chain representing the Navy and a length of machine gun magazine from the Army. This ellipse would then be stood on a water feature which would have a pedestal and radius rising steps in polished masonry. To allow for the many faiths that study at the college a inscribed masonry unit bearing the word 'Remember' was also manufactured and laid into the face of the ellipse.

The Precast department at Thornley produced mould drawings in conjunction with HLM and their Chariman,Chris Liddle, was personally involved in the casting of the feature, introducing and arranging the ordnance into the ellipse.
