Also known as "living roofs", green roofs serve several purposes such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, helping to lower urban air temperatures and combat the heat island effect. It can also be used to describe the use of "green" technology such as a cool roof, roofs with solar thermal collectors or photovoltaic modules. The seminar will provide an understanding of the different types of green roofs, the components, the basic design considerations and what the relevant standards area.
Lionel Shearman, Director, Safeguard Europe. Lionel will examine the benefits of green roofs and the driving forces behind their increasing popularity. He will also give examples of various planting options including self-colonising 'brown' or 'bio diverse' roofs. Lionel's presentation is RIBA Core Curriculum CPD Approved and certificates will be available.
Matthew Hoddinot, Tecnical Director, Cityroofs. Matthew's presentation will consider the design implications of urban greening, rainwater harvesting, and the whole life cost of changing roof space into innovative useage such as parking spaces, harnessing natural resources, and to provide water management. CPD certificates will also be available for Matthew's lecture.
The event will interest a wide audience of: architects, engineers, and landscape architects, roofing consultants and contractors, landscape contractors and designers, horticulturists and environmentalists specifers, and developers.
