Case Study - Ryhope Beach Underpass
In the summer of 2007, Birse CL completed work on the Sunderland Southern Radial Route. As part of the southern section at Ryhope Beach, an existing brick arch underpass was replaced with a reinforced concrete box on bored, cast in-situ concrete piles.
As appearance was of utmost importance in this section, the wing walls were constructed using Keystone Compac block and the unsightly grey concrete was clad with 95mm Keystone slips that were fixed to the concrete structure using stainless steel wall ties.
Two Keystone pilasters were constructed where the cladding joined the wall to provide continuity. The subcontractor P.C. Construction of Chester carried out the work.
