Case Study - Leeds Inner Ring Road

At the heart of Britain's first urban motorway, the Leeds Inner Ring Road is the Hunslet Viaduct. The route runs from South Accommodation Road in Hunslet and will connect with Junction 4 of the M621. Construction of the £50million scheme started in May 2006 with completion expected by autumn 2008.

The principal feature of the scheme is a 500m long viaduct over the existing road network made up of composite steel girder and pre-cast concrete decks.

The Moor Road/M621 on-slip, South Accommodation Road and the viaduct parapets needed an appearance befitting of the surrounding area. Forticrete working closely with Main Contractor Alfred Mc Alpine, managed to make a Black Keystone Block that matched the requirement by the Leeds City Council/Mouchel Parkman team.

The reinforced soil ramps, designed and supplied by Forticrete, joined the new viaduct and the existing road level. 95mm slips were post fixed to the concrete structure to give the desired continual appearance.
